Apptrap vs appcleaner12/27/2022 ![]() Why AppZapper needs access to Contacts is strange to me. (I should note that the AppZapper version is labeled "El Capitan" and that when it is opened for the first time it requests access to your Contacts. Then I added AppZapper after I discovered that it claims to allow up to 5 free "zaps" in demo mode. It found 3 more folders/files than AppTrap. I deleted two apps and AppCleaner was the clear winner with Test 2. One difference I noted is that AppTrap shows the app itself in the delete list while AppCleaner does not. I had considered doing this in the past but never got around to it. Since you mentioned the app removal utilities you considered, I decided to run a test on AppTrap and AppCleaner to see how they compared re their effectiveness at removing support files. Very much like VirtualBox, Parallels, or Fusion.Īgain, thanks and sorry for the drivel. I was an MVS sysprog, but VM was pretty slick in that it was often used to host guest MVS images, without partitioning the processor. Hey, I came from an IBM mainframe environment and there were two basic operating systems: MVS and VM. "stuff" happens and neither served any real purpose other than I thought it was cool being able to run Windows on a Mac, circumventing Bootcamp. Subsequently, I launched VirtualBox and it seems that I whacked the two VM's I'd configured. Yeah, I was a little suspicious, but dragged them to the AppCleaner window. So, somewhere along the line, I managed to delete what I believed, were duplicated VirtualBox applications. I have no idea why or how this situation came to be. For example, iPhotos was only in the nested Applications folder. ![]() Some seemed duplicated and there were some application, mostly older, existed. Same routine, but I found that somewhere along the line, there was an Applications folder within the Applications folder. my MacPro was my next victim, still Mojave. Then, I used AppCleaner, and finally, a manual Move to Trash on some remaining folders and ancillary application files. I found a few applications with uninstall utilities included and proceeded. In fact, VERY well.įirst, I downloaded AppCleaner on an already Catalina upgraded MacBook Pro. AppCleaner does accept donations and I just might since it seems to work well. AppZapper wasn't free, albeit a very reasonable price, though unlikely I'll have a frequent need for something like this. I ended up with AppCleaner, which was a toss-up with AppTrap, for no particular reason. Just wanted to follow up and thank you all for the advice. ![]() Does dragging an app to the Trash constitute a proper uninstall? Seems some remnants may be left behind in various folders, by not using an uninstall utility that seems more common in the Windows world. So, this brings up a question I've had since going to the 'dark side', some thirteen years ago. I could have done that before the update. I did so so I would know what I needed to replace with the latest version like colorchecker passport and several others. I just went through them and binned them after the update. Before updating can I bin all these 32 bit apps identified with impunity? or just ignore them? Or bin them after updating to Catalina. My current iMac is not struggling, it is just old.Ĭhecking in System Information shows a number of 32 bit applications most of which I haven't used for years or I don't recognise. I'm not looking forward to setting up all the accounts and making sure the calendar syncs with the 4 other devices we use, etc. I'm getting a new iMac in a few weeks and I'm wrestling with a clean install or just cloning the old one. Sometimes there are other documents around them but I wasn't sure if they were still in use. At the bottom it shows the path on how to find them. It sure would be nice to access all not used playlists only.Īctually late last night I used Go64 and deleted all the 3 bit apps. I also went through the 3 libraries and in application support as well and deleted things I knew were gone or not used. There might be stuff left over but the apps are not usable and not there so it won't be looking for them. ![]() System is running well and all software I use is functioning. And some I don't know what they are I've left untouched. ![]() The obvious one's I didn't need I flicked before using their uninstaller where applicable. ![]()
